Mobility has reshaped voice communications and is poised to have the same impact on video communications. The powerful combination of mobility and real-time video communications is further enhanced by the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend in mobility, enabling devices and applications designed for consumer usage to affect employees of small, medium-sized and large enterprises.
According to IDG Enterprise’s 2012 Unified Communications (News - Alert) & Collaboration Survey, 52 percent of respondents are spending on telepresence, though moderately, and 36 percent consider video a key component of their UC and collaboration approach.
Damaka – a provider of secure, real-time mobile multiparty video calling and mobile collaboration solutions to enable communication and collaboration on any device, any network, anytime and anywhere – recently introduced Xabr, a unique software client that extends the video, audio, IM, presence and collaboration capabilities of Cisco’s (News - Alert) Unified Communications solutions to iOS and Android mobile devices, without any additional hardware or software requirement.
Mobile enterprise users of Xabr can connect to their Cisco infrastructure without any additional hardware or software requirement. Xabr can connect from within or outside a corporate firewall, and enterprises that have deployed Cisco solutions can leverage their existing hardware infrastructure to include Xabr as part of their mobile strategies.
Cisco Unified Communications products connect people, information and teams, helping to enable comprehensive and effective collaboration. The portfolio includes collaboration applications, customer collaboration and telepresence solutions.
“Xabr offers unique modality management of IM, audio, video and desktop sharing. With the power of software, our goal is to unify Cisco’s suite of communication and collaboration solutions into a unified native mobile client,” said Siva Chaturvedi (News - Alert), CEO at Damaka, in a statement. “Users of Jabber, Call Manager, TelePresence, and soon – WebEx, will have a unified video & collaborative experience on smartphones & tablets.”
Xabr will be available in the Apple App Store and Google (News - Alert) Play shortly. The company also recently made available its Xavy for Microsoft OCS R2 and Lync solution. With Xavy, processes implemented via Lync and OCS can be extended to smartphones and tablets.
Xavy is primarily intended for on-premises usage by enterprise users.
